Louis Le Vau (1612 – 11 October 1670) was a French Classical Baroque architect, who worked for Louis XIV of France.[2] He was born and later died in the city of Paris.
Louis Le Vau’s career in architecture began when he was commissioned to help rebuild part of the medieval castle of Vincennes[1].From there, his earlier work consisted of the noteworthy Hotel Lambert, part of the Parisian hôtels particuliers around in 1639-1644, and the chateau of Nicolas Fouquet, the Vaux-le-Vitcome in 1656 with the help of André Le Nôtre and Charles Le Brun[2]. From 1661-1664 Le Vau worked on the Galerie d'Apollon in the Louvre. Claude Perrault and Charles Le Brun were also involved in creating the famous façade for the east front of in 1665-1674 that acted as a prelude for Classical Architecture in the 18th century[2].Later, from 1661-1674 Le Vau contributed to the Collège des Quatre Nations (now housing the institute de France) and showed unlikely rapport for Italian baroque techniques[3]. The most notable of Le Vau’s projects was at the Palace of Versailles. He was assisted by François d' Orbay in expanding the chateau and creating the garden façade. When Le Vau passed away his work there was taken over by Jules Hardouin-Mansart[2][1].
